The long wait for relief from construction congestion on US-127 is almost over. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the northbound roadway and ramps are on track to reopen within two weeks, with contractors aiming to have them operational as early as this weekend.

“It’s been a complete overhaul,” said MDOT construction engineer Trevor Block. “We’ve been tearing up the road and making it all brand new.” With the final touches underway, drivers will soon enjoy smoother commutes and unrestricted lanes. Block added, “Within the coming weeks, we’re going to be kind of putting it all back together so that everybody’s got their normal roadway to drive on.”

A Major Investment in Safety

This two-year reconstruction project is part of a $205 million investment addressing safety concerns on one of Michigan’s key highways. The work began earlier this year on the northbound lanes and ramps, with significant efforts to rebuild from the ground up. Block acknowledged the inconvenience, stating, “We never like to have to do a large project like this where we impact so many people, but at the same time, it’s our job to take care of the roads.”

What’s Next for Commuters?

Next week, contractors plan to switch the single northbound traffic lane to the far-right lane of the newly constructed highway while reopening northbound ramps. Crews will spend several days removing barrier walls and applying new pavement markings, followed by returning southbound lanes to their original configuration. By then, drivers can enjoy a detour-free journey—at least until next spring.

Looking Ahead to March

MDOT has confirmed plans to tackle the southbound side of US-127 starting in early March, ensuring the highway meets the highest safety and quality standards for years to come. For now, Lansing commuters can look forward to a smoother, more efficient ride as this significant phase of the project concludes.
