Why the Expansion Matters

Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is more than a travel hub. It is a major driver of local jobs and investment. Scope of the 2025 Expansion

The airport covers about 3,000 acres. The current expansion will develop 450 acres in the near term. Of this, more than 150 acres already have tenants lined up. Officials reviewed around 20 proposals and signed six Letters of Intent (LOIs). Three projects have final approval:

• PPK Aviation LLC – 36 acres for commercial hangars and an 84,000-square-foot maintenance facility.
• EPC Aerospace – 66.7 acres for an aircraft modification and maintenance campus.
• Diversified Realty Acquisitions LLC – Mixed-use site, possibly with hangars and a hotel.

Infrastructure Improvements

Infrastructure work is essential for the success of the expansion. The following upgrades are in progress:

• Runway Renovation – $13 million project to improve Runway 9L/27R and the terminal apron. Completion expected in 2026.
• Parking Expansion – A new 1,000-space surface lot is being built from April 2025 to December 2026.
• Sanford Airport Connector Road – Proposed $173–$200 million project linking SR 417 to the airport. The preferred Alignment 2A is up for decision in October 2025. If approved, it will cut Lake Mary Boulevard traffic nearly in half.

These upgrades will reduce congestion, improve freight movement, and make the airport more attractive to large tenants.

Economic Impact

The expansion will create about 1,000 direct jobs in aviation, logistics, and hospitality. Indirect jobs in construction, retail, and services will also grow. In addition, the local tax base will expand. This means more funds for schools, infrastructure, and community projects.

Combined with Seminole County’s $61 million indoor events complex, the airport’s growth will draw more visitors and boost tourism spending.
