Structural Steel Estimator ~ Metro Detroit
The Birmingham Group is partnering with a well-established contractor seeking a Structural Steel Estimator to support estimating efforts across a diverse portfolio of projects, including commercial, light industrial, institutional, and manufacturing.
This role is responsible for coordinating full-cycle estimating services, from conceptual budgeting through detailed bid preparation. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of structural steel systems, cost drivers, and estimating methodologies, along with the ability to contribute to accurate and competitive project bids.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed estimates for structural steel projects across multiple sectors
- Develop conceptual and hard bid estimates based on drawings and specifications
- Perform quantity takeoffs and cost analysis for structural steel components
- Coordinate with internal teams, subcontractors, and suppliers for pricing and scope alignment
- Apply cost control and estimating best practices throughout the preconstruction process
- Review project documents to identify scope gaps, risks, and value engineering opportunities
- Support bid submissions and assist with project handoff to operations
Qualifications
- 5+ years of estimating experience in the structural steel industry
- Strong understanding of conceptual estimating, estimating techniques, and cost control
- Ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, and fabrication requirements
- Experience coordinating full estimating processes from early budgeting through final bid
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- PE (Professional Engineer) or PMP certification is a plus
