Some construction candidates might send out hundreds of resumes when they are looking for a construction job and then not even get a single interview. If that’s the case, then it’s probably time to reexamine your overall job search strategy. Although there’s a labor shortage, candidates still need to focus on doing the right things when they are searching for a new opportunity in their construction career.
The Resume Blast
Blasting your resume to many jobs instead of customizing your resume to a particular position. Hiring managers are looking for specific skills that are relevant to the position in which they are looking to fill. Candidates also need to confirm that their objective doesn’t contradict the position that they are applying for. Construction recruiters are experts at helping candidates customize their resumes while creating objectives to fit open positions. It’s also crucial to highlight all of your relevant experience. Although some applicants tend to exaggerate a little on their resumes, it’s important to remember that there is a fine line between overstating accomplishments and flat-out lying about them. Yet hiring managers typically prefer those candidates that simply feature their best legitimate achievements that matches the position.
Only Contacting Human Resources
Don’t just send your resume to Human Resources. The ultimate goal is to get your resume directly into the hands of the hiring manager. Research the company’s LinkedIn page and try to find the hiring manager’s contact information and send them your resume directly. But, don’t stop there. Try to arrange an appointment soon after submitting your resume so that you remain relevant. An effective approach might be to send a LinkedIn message similar to: “I saw this position and see myself being a great fit for xyz reasons.” Message or call the hiring manager directly. Research the position so that you are able to craft the most effective resume and cover letter. Find employees of the company that are in the same position using resources such as LinkedIn. You’ll have a better idea of who they are looking for because you’ve looked at the people they’ve already hired.
Not Updating (or Checking) Voicemail
If things go well, the hiring managers or construction recruiter will eventually call you to schedule an interview. A common mistake candidates make is that they don’t update their voicemail message to a professional greeting. Or they fail to set one up at all. Avoid having the automatic default voicemail message; or having an overly casual or rude voicemail message. Check your messages promptly when you are job hunting!
Not Using a Great Recruiter
Great recruiters understand their market because they specialize in the industry and have connections throughout the market. They understand what motivates candidates and how to highlight their top strengths. And they know how to manage every part of the interview process to ensure you put your best foot forward.
