Consumers Energy’s planned project at Hardy Dam in Big Prairie Township, Newaygo County, is set to move forward with construction beginning in 2025, according to a news release from the company.

The project will involve building an auxiliary spillway, a splash wall, and replacing the roadway.

The release stated, “Despite ongoing discussions about the future of Michigan’s river hydro strategy, Consumers Energy is moving ahead with the Hardy Dam project in 2025, pending necessary regulatory, environmental, and federal approvals.”

Passing the Necessary Tests

Since 2023, the project has received approvals from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), including a temporary variance and amendments to the license to modify the auxiliary spillway, outlet channel, and dam crest. Additionally, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued the required permits.

Consumers Energy has also worked with the Newaygo County Road Commission on the roadway replacement, chosen a general contractor for the construction, and is collaborating with FERC’s Division of Dam Safety and Inspections to secure final design and construction approval.

“We are awaiting construction approval from FERC and approval for project cost recovery from the Michigan Public Service Commission,” the release noted.

The EGLE permit requires a drawdown after Labor Day with the return to normal pond levels before Memorial Day.

“We remain committed to being good neighbors and keeping the community informed about our plans for Hardy Dam, which has provided clean, renewable energy for nearly a century,” the release concluded.
